Perfect call just now in Braves' game...

1st and 3rd, 1 out.

Bunt (foolish) down the 3rd base line.

3rd baseman grabs it and flings it toward 1st; hits the runner.

The runner is on the infield grass. By rule, he's interfering.

The ball bounces into foul territory and the Braves round the bases, up
until the 1st-base umpire correctly calls the batter out for interfering
and sends the runners back to 1st and 3rd.

Stupid bunt, brilliant umpiring. I hate that it hurt the Braves, but I
love that the umpire had the knowledge and the guts to make that call.

100% correct call; I wish that the fans in Atlanta would stop booing it.

It was an easy call to make. Like you mentioned, the guy wasn't just
out of the lane, he was all the way on the infield grass. Just
because the fans don't know the rules, it doesn't mean that every
umpire in baseball wouldn't have gotten that call right.

But, now that you've said something nice about the umpires, you can go
to town on them over the infield fly call they just made.

That *might* be worse than the utter skull-fucking the Orioles got from
the umpires in the 1996 American League Championship Series.

The fans' behavior is inexcusable, of course.

Nah, the Jeffrey Maier call was an atrocity, this one was probably a
bad call, but it's in a gray area.

The call today was not as bad as the one you mentioned,

Moreover, we Cardinals fans are still smarting from the Don Denkinger
call back in '85.

I'd say it all evens out in the end.

You should still be reveling in the help received last year and an
undeserved World Series title.

Maybe over a span of 1,000 years, but no one who understands statistics
would even suggest that it does so over a sample as large as a decade.

Why do you think it was undeserved?

It's a throw away line... just making conversation.

For one thing, the Cardinals didn't even belong in the post-season and
got there with significant help from blue. For another, strike three...
not called. Annoying, and I don't even like the Rangers. :P

Sorry, I'm not following... why didn't they belong? They won enough
games to get there. By help from blue, I'm guessing you mean the
umpires... I don't recall any help. Is there a specific call or calls
you're referring to? Finally, I don't know which strike three call
you're talking about.

But the Denkinger call still sucks! ;-)

I don't remember the specifics at this point, tbh. *shrug*

They made up for it with the dipshit infield fly rule.

If the runer was not inside the "lane" the call was elementary. The
sad part is the need nowadays to compliment someone for making the
right call - not that complimenting him was wrong.

I did not see the game. If the fly could have been handled by an
infielder, the call was correct - even if an outfielder caught the
ball - although I have not called a baseball game in 30 years.

What I would call, that never is, is a runner trying to take out an
infielder when his slide would not be close enough for him to touch
the bag. And I would call the runner safe when the infielder leaves
the bag before catching the ball.
