I just saw the Arizona has him on the block. He's having his usual
second half, with a .900+ OPS and a bunch of homers. Rumor is that
Atlanta is trying to get Derrek Lee's bad back from the Cubs, but I'd
much rather see LaRoche come back for round three. Maybe Atlanta can
sign him to a two-year deal that covers the second half of the next
four seasons...

I presume the team chose Lee over LaRoche because he's righthanded, and
their only other power is lefthanded (MCann and Heyward).

That, and he apparently is owed a fair amount of money next year, and
presumably would block Freeman. He'd probably cost more in terms of
prospects in return, also.

I get why the organization wouldn't want him longer term, but I'm
primarily interested in seeing the Braves win the division and I think
LaRoche would help win more games than Lee. Being right-handed is
nice, but not needing an epidural to swing the bat is even better.

So far both have WAR 0.6. It seems Lee is better defensively - and quite
hot since ASG break. And don't forget about veteran leadership and
playoffs experience, they are invaluable. Is he scrappy?

You make a good point, scrappy veteran leadership is worth at least 2
or 3 wins. SABR really needs to start measuring those intangibles.

FWIW, everything I've read today suggests Lee is one of the best
clubhouse guys ever (Greg Maddux said as much). And since this team
seems to be real big on chemistry, he should fit right in.

Whether or not that translates to wins is subject to opinion, I suppose,
since intangibles are just that.

I _knew_ I forgot about something - chemistry, of course! Ability to
lose and feel good about it.

Ah, I didn't realize he was signed for two years, I had assumed just one.
